Medically Assisted Suicide

Assisted suicide is committed when a doctor  injects a lethal dose of drugs into the patient with his permission and kills him. This may sound awful at first and right away people would be extremely against it, However, I learned about this in my sociology class my senior year of high school, and once people understand why people are committing this act then it does not sound as awful. I watched a video once about a man who was going through with assisted suicide, he knew exactly what he was doing and what was going to happen, and it was okay with it.

Assisted suicide is illegal in most places, due to the fact that it is considered killing another person but before a doctor can even go through with assisted suicide the patient must go through a series of counseling that informs that about what they are doing and makes them aware that this is something they can not go back and change. Once the procedure is done then it is done. Normally people who want assisted suicide is those who are terminally ill, people who are paralyzed or have any type of muscle disorder causing them to not be able to take care of themselves, people who no longer want to be a burden to anyone else and know that they will not live very long to begin with.

The procedure of assisted suicide happens in a doctors office or a hospital, all it consists of is normally an IV in their arm. The loved ones of the patient are allowed to come in and say their good byes before they pass away. Then once the procedure is taking place, they record it for legal purposes stating that the patient was the one who wanted to this done and they give full legal consent to assisted suicide, and then they push a button on their own that injects them with the drug that will kill them.

As bad as this may sound, I believe that assisted suicide should be legal. For people who have a terminal illness and can no longer take care of themselves and do daily things that they used to be able to, they should be given a choice to be put out of their misery. It normally does not hurt them and they just peacefully fall asleep and then they pass away.

  1. Interesting topic, I like it! I have read a few articles on this subject and i agree that this should be legal under the right situations. If you are terminally ill and wish to end the pain that you deal with every day you should be able to do that.

  2. This is very interesting. You could also talk about the viewpoint of the doctor. Should it still be legal if they doctor feels uncomfortable doing it? Or can the doctor say no to the procedure? I feel like if I was a doctor I would not fight the patients choice, but would not want to be the doctor preforming the procedure.

  3. I agree with you. I think people should have that right to choose if they are terminally ill, but like with everything there were times when doctors took it to the extreme such as the angel of death. You may want to include a little history as to why so many states frown upon it as well.

  4. Very interesting topic. I agree that if you are terminally ill then it should be your choice. Maybe try to go over different scenarios of what you think should be legal to have medically assisted suicide and what shouldn't be.

  5. I really enjoyed reading this point of view I never really thought much about assisted suicide so I didn't have a view myself on it. After reading this I have to say I agree with you that it should be the people's choice on how they want to pass away and when. But with the idea of 'special circumstances' I agree to a point, it should either be legal or illegal, black and white with no gray area in between for these 'special circumstances' because what that causes is a lot of confusion on the situation and in some cases it could be pushed to far. So with that being said, what would you say would be allowed and wouldn't be allowed?

  6. I watched a debate on this topic last year, I have all the same views and beliefs as you and I personally agree that if you're terminally ill or in another high risk case that you should be able to end it if you want. The only thing really stopping this is the Right to Live, so and thats why I personally don't believe it hasn't been too popular. Good topic!
